Last Night

Last night, what a great fire they had!

What a great crowd!

They joked, they laughed, they laughed, they told stories,

they gossiped, they filled their bellies with food,

they caroused,

Until late in the night.

Then one by one his friends left.

Little by little the fire died down.

Soon only one friend remained,

and then he too departed.

Soon only embers remained of the great fire.

then these too were gone.

The old man became enveloped in darkness.

He thought, "What a great night we had! What a great fire!"

Early tomorrow, he knew he would fish in the stream for his

breakfast.

He would plow his stony field,

He would mend his broken hut...

Then he hoped to renew a friendship with an old forgotten

neighbor.

They would light a fire.
